It would help to deal with both simultaneously when you classify things as positives and negatives since one may not exist without the other. Since Nature values neutrality and this drive is underpinned by a state of non-duality (which we, unfortunately, cannot attain because of our limited thinking). Is it, therefore, necessary to strive to eliminate all positive and negative thoughts if everything has a neutral undertone and positive and negative are only a matter of perception? Could we “dull” our perception to experience everything as it truly is, i.e., as a continuous, amorphous nothingness connected to all other nothingnesses? If that were true, wouldn’t we risk becoming a vegetable of sorts, never feeling much (high or low) and in a state of evenness and emotionlessness? Are those goals worth pursuing?
Don’t worry! Human beings cannot even come close to this (unless we suffer some severe brain damage, which I strongly advise against). The thoughts we think (whether perceived as positive or negative) come into our minds before we can process them, i.e., they are much faster than us and beyond our control. Although we cannot control them, they occur to us at all times.
Therefore, in this human body, we will continue to have thoughts come up, and it’s not about controlling the thought (that’s impossible) but about how you evaluate that thought as an observer (that’s something you can control if you are skilled enough). I have a thought. It might seem optimistic, or it might seem negative. There is an associated emotion.
Be kind to it, and it will go as soon as it comes (it always does). In the end, a new state begins (before you recognize it and is completely uncontrollable). Repeat the process with those following thoughts and the feelings they generated. Follow these thoughts and review the feelings they generate. Let them be! Feel the anger — it will pass fast if you don’t give it much attention. Avoid praising it! Happiness is easy to experience, but do not let it consume you, for it will pass.
In other words, it isn’t about the thoughts you are having but about what judgments you are making about the thoughts you are having. In other words, you should be aware of the attitude with which you observe your thoughts and how they affect your emotional state. It is counterproductive to have trouble thinking positively, for the more you do that, the more negativity you will bring about. Rather than taking life too seriously, think brighter by accepting and experiencing life’s apparent richness, no matter how different it might be (happy, sad, high, low). This game is all there is. Think smart, and you’ll succeed.
